6th Sense Launches in Madrid with First Network Event

From March 30th to April 4th,   the first Network Event of the 6thSense project at IMDEA, marking the official launch of this exciting initiative in the field of Joint Communication and Sensing (JCAS). As part of the Marie Curie programme, these events are about bringing people together—Doctoral Candidates (DCs), supervisors, and partners—to build connections, share ideas, and lay the groundwork for future collaborations.

The event kicked off with a welcome coffee and refreshments, giving DCs, supervisors, and partners the chance to meet in person for the first time. The day continued with project presentations, introductions from the DCs, and the first Supervisory Board Meeting. In the evening, the group enjoyed a guided walking tour through the heart of Madrid, followed by a cozy dinner at a local restaurant near Plaza Mayor, known for its great food and laid-back atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to dive deeper into Spanish gastronomy and informal networking.

The following days were packed with a range of engaging activities. The DCs took part in several workshops focused on both soft and technical skills, including “Surviving PhD Studies: Our Experience” by Arash Asadi, which gave a practical look at what PhD life is really like; “How to Come Up with Great Research” by Paolo Casari, sharing useful tips and frameworks for generating innovative research ideas; and a session on “Scientific Writing Skills” led by Jordi Pérez Colomé, focused on improving clarity and impact in academic writing.

There were also some standout technical talks by experts from both academia and industry. Highlights included “From Localization to Coherent Imaging: A New Frontier for Network Sensing in 6G” by Dario Tagliaferri and “Navigating the Quantum Leap in Telecom & Tech – An Enterprise Revolution” by Nirlay Kundu. Beyond the sessions, the group also had the opportunity to visit two of IMDEA’s research labs—the 5TONIC and the mm Wave Lab— providing a closer look at the ongoing network research.

The event closed with final remarks from the IMDEA team, thanking everyone for their energy and participation, and wishing the DCs all the best as they begin their research journeys. Overall, it was four sunny and inspiring days filled with learning, sharing, and connecting. This first 6thSense Network Event laid a strong foundation for the project and sparked a lot of excitement for what’s to come in the world of JCAS.
